Wayne Resident Becomes Associate Dean at NJIT's Newark College of Engineering

Basil C. Baltzis, PhD, professor of chemical, biological and pharmaceutical engineering, has been appointed associate dean of academic affairs at NJIT's Newark College of Engineering (NCE).  Baltzis is a resident of Wayne. 

“It is my pleasure to make this announcement,” said NCE Dean Sunil Saigal.  

“Dr. Baltzis will assist NCE with matters related to academic affairs.   His appointment was effective Dec. 1, 2011.”

 Baltis has served as chair of his department from 2001–2006 and as associate chair for graduate studies in chemical engineering from 1988–1991, and again in from 1999 – 2001.  He is the former director of NJIT's Pharmaceuticals/Specialty Chemicals Cluster of the Emission Reduction Research Center. 

At NJIT, Baltzis has done over $2 million of funded research in the area of biological treatment of liquid and gaseous hazardous wastes.  He has more than 60 publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters.  His experimental and modeling work on the dynamics of forced bioreactors and biofilters is internationally recognized and has been cited over 600 times.  He has chaired a number of sessions of meetings of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and has organized and co-chaired an engineering foundation conference.  

Baltzis has a sustained record of teaching excellence.  In 2000, he numbered among the inaugural recipients of the Master Teacher designation and has sustained a strong interest in engineering education research and innovative teaching methods. 

In 1998, he received the Robert W. Van Houten Award for Teaching Excellence and in 1999, the Harlan J. Perlis Research Award.  He has also received the NJIT Excellence in Teaching Award for Graduate Level Instruction (1988) and, twice, the NCE Excellence in Teaching Award (1999 and 2010).  A member of the New York Academy of Sciences, he also belongs to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society,  the American Society of Engineering Education, the honorary societies, Omega Chi Epsilon and Sigma Xi and in Greece, the Hellenic Chamber of Engineers.

Baltzis holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota, a master’s of science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece.  All the degrees are in chemical engineering.
