NJIT was the 13th/14th largest site in the US, the largest in NJ, and the 43rd/46th largest in the world out of 246 sites that participated this weekend in Global Game Jam 2012, with 69 registered participants developing nine games. This year's event focused on web and mobile gaming, with a number of games developed for web and mobile platforms such Microsoft Mobile OS with four games successively developed and one for iPhone. To support student efforts, Microsoft ran a development workshop for Windows Phone and provided all students who developed Windows mobile games with a 4G Windows Smartphone.

"This year we had predominantly NJIT students with a good mix coming from the School of Art and Design and the Information Technology Program at the College of Computing Sciences," said Andrzej Zarzcyki, an assistant professor in NJIT's College of Architecture and Design who coordinated the event. "Students formed a number of multidisciplinary teams, the results of which were evident in the quality of their game projects."
