A Successful and Busy Semester for NJIT Students Enrolled in Concrete Industry Management (CIM) Program

The Fall 2012 semester has proven to be both busy and successful for students enrolled in NJIT’s Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program.  Andrew Canon, of Parsippany, CIM student and president of the NJIT American Concrete Institute (ACI) student chapter, appeared on the December cover of Concrete International.  The photograph was taken when Canon and other CIM students earlier this fall attended the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) annual conference in Chicago.  The NJIT ACI student chapter was initiated by the CIM program in 2010.  Mohamed Mahgoub directs both programs.

But that wasn’t all.  No more than a few weeks before the conference, a hearty band of CIM, Civil Engineering, and Construction Engineering Technology students—all members in good standing of the NJIT ACI student chapter-- trekked up to Toronto to compete in the biannual ACI International competition.

The competition is a training ground for students studying the best ways to use concrete. Every competition features a different challenge to inspire students to develop innovative concrete designs and applications.  This particular competition involved the design and construction of a concrete frame intended to withstand impulse loading of a heavy weight dropped directly on top of the frame.  The frame protected an egg placed underneath it.

The students had spent months preparing for the event by designing and building the most effective concrete egg protection frame,” said Anlee Orama, NJIT ACI Chapter assistant advisor, who worked with the students to prepare the project.

 Their efforts paid off well:  The NJIT team took third place in the performance category, competing against 33 skilled teams from universities all over the world.

“We were thrilled when we took this third place price,” said Orama.  “Yes, we would have loved to come in first, but we gave it our all and this achievement is our highest since we established our NJIT ACI student chapter only in 2010.” 

Participating students were Canon; Brian Neves, South River; Fabian De La Hoz, Paterson; John Te, Avenel; Robert Goncalves, Hazlet; Tyler Hanson, Rutherford; and Evan Hoff, Hackettstown.

CIM students also learned a great deal this past semester participating in a composite flooring research project on campus.  They watched and learned as concrete was poured in an experimental project carried out by a doctoral engineering student.  Aside from the graduate students involved in the work, the CIM students were the only undergraduates present.  They worked hard for six hours following their 7 a.m. arrival and performed quality control testing on the delivered concrete.  They also assisted with the finishing of the concrete deck.  All who participated hold ACI Level 1 Testing Certifications.
