Forbes Names NJIT as One of America's Top Colleges

Forbes has named NJIT as one of America’s Top Colleges in 2013.  The online guide notes that NJIT, established in 1881, offers 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and that the majority of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors are undergraduate with almost 3,000 graduate students.

The most popular majors for undergraduates are architecture, engineering and computer science.  NJIT also has a highly respected and widely used online education program. The university operates a 67-node supercomputer called Hydra, as well as a class-10 and class-1000 clean room – used for academic purposes such as counter-bioterrorism research.  NJIT competes in NCAA Division I athletics, and the school mascot is the Highlander.

NJIT continues to demonstrate the value of its educational offerings in STEM, according to the latest 2013 PayScale college rankings for return on investment (ROI).  NJIT is 6th (top 1.3 percent) among 437 public universities and 27th (top 1.8 percent) among 1,500 public and private institutions in the U.S.  PayScale also continues to single out NJIT as 8th in nation among public universities for salary potential.

NJIT is ranked a top tier national research university by US News & World Report, and a top 200 American research university by the Center for Measuring University Performance at Arizona State. NJIT is among the top 50 colleges without a medical school when it comes to research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation.  NJIT research expenditures totaled more than $102 million in FY 2012.  As of August 20, 2012, NJIT had 114 non-provisional patent applications pending of which 56 are funded by third parties and 25 provisional patent applications pending.  In addition, NJIT has 154 unexpired US patents of which 53 are unlicensed.  The remaining 101 are either licensed (84, optioned 6) or jointly owned (11 with third parties).
