Computer Scientist, Educator, Researcher Marek Rusinkiewicz Named New NJIT Dean

Computer scientist, educator, and former research executive Marek Rusinkiewicz, PhD, has been appointed dean of the NJIT College of Computing Sciences, effective Sept. 1, 2013. 

Rusinkiewicz most recently served as a senior group vice president and the general manager of applied research laboratories at Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bell Communication Research), which included R&D centers in NJ, Texas, Taiwan and Poland.

Under his leadership, Telcordia Labs carried out research in wireless communications, network management and protocols, mathematical sciences, software engineering, information processing, and information security.  The Labs served as the innovation engine for Telcordia and its customers, which included most of the world’s major carriers and providers of telecommunication services, plus government agencies.

Before joining Telcordia, Rusinkiewicz was vice president for information technology research of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC), Austin, a leading industrial R&D consortium.  He led initiatives there to develop the next generation information management technologies, including web search, semantic agents, and collaboration management.

Rusinkiewicz has held academic positions at the University of Glasgow, Warsaw University of Technology, the University of Michigan, and the University of Houston, where he was a professor of computer science until 1999.  His most recent academic appointment was as a courtesy professor at Florida International University. 

His research interests include heterogeneous database systems, distributed computing, workflow management, and agent-based systems.  Rusinkiewicz has published extensively in these areas.  Industry and government agencies, including DARPA, ARL, NSF, NIST, have funded his work.  He has been actively involved in IEEE International Conferences on data engineering and the RIDE annual workshops, having served as a program chairman, general chairman, and steering committee member for both events.  He has been a program committee member of all major information technology conferences and serves on several journal editorial boards.  Since 1998, he has been editor-in-chief of the World Wide Web Journal.

Rusinkiewicz is a member of International Federation of Information Processing Working Group on Databases, a founding member of International Foundation on Cooperative Information Systems, and a member of the International Advisory Board of Japan’s National Institute of Informatics.  In 2006, he was appointed to the Networking and Information Technology Technical Advisory Group of the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.  He serves on advisory boards of several universities and has consulted extensively for numerous industry and government organizations in the USA, Japan, and Europe.

Rusinkiewicz received his doctorate in informatics from the Polish Academy of Sciences.
