CBPE Student Wins Fellowship from the American Petroleum Institute

Francisco Guzman

Francisco Guzman, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Pharmaceutical Engineering (CBPE) working with NJIT’s Center for Natural Resources Development and Protection (NRDP), has won a fellowship from the American Petroleum Institute that includes attending the 2014 International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) in Savannah, Georgia in May of this year. The IOSC, the largest conference on oil spills, occurs once every three years and provides a forum for professionals from government, private and academic organizations to share their latest research findings. Guzman received the award after succeeding in a national proposal competition on promising research to deal with oil spills. His idea relies on using colloids (sediments) to trap oil before reaching the shorelines. Guzman is working under the supervision of Professors Michel Boufadel, director of the NRDP Center, and Norman Loney, chair of CBPE.
