On the first day of May, the cadets of Air Force ROTC Detachment 490 based at NJIT welcomed Colonel Kent Dalton, AFROTC Northeast Regional Commander, during a special session of the unit’s leadership lab. The region serves as the intermediate command authority providing oversight and staff policy to 37 detachments in 15 states, covering 387 colleges and universities and nearly 3,500 cadets.
Dalton, who was visiting from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, entered the Air Force through the ROTC program at The Ohio State University in 1988. Prior to his current assignment at Wright Patterson, he held numerous missile crew, spacelift, missile warning, surveillance, instructor, evaluator, and key wing and headquarters-level staff positions.
In addition to answering the cadets’ questions about a career in the Air Force as commissioned officers, Dalton spoke about core values basic to success as leaders, including physical, mental, spiritual and social resiliency. “Above all, stay focused every day on being the best person you can be,” he said in the course of sharing experiences he has had as an Air Force officer.
