Clifford Samuel '88
Clifford M. Samuel, who received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from NJIT in 1988, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Access Operations and Emerging Markets in the Corporate & Medical Affairs organization of Gilead Sciences, Inc. Samuel, who serves on the Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors and received NJIT’s Edward F. Weston Medal for Professional Achievement in 2010, joined Gilead in 1996 as a member of the Vistide sales team.
After several years within the U.S. commercial organization, Samuel joined the Access Operations & Emerging Markets group in 2007 to lead access initiatives in the developing world and commercial efforts in emerging markets. Since that time, the team has worked to expand access to the company’s HIV and HCV medicines and, as of today, patients in more than 130 developing countries are being treated with Gilead therapeutics as the team has worked to broaden agreements with generic manufacturers in India and South Africa.
“I’d like to extend my sincere congratulations to Clifford on his well-deserved promotion and his joining the executive committee of Gilead Sciences,” said NJIT President Joel S. Bloom. “I recall sitting in his office well over a decade ago and hearing of his vision for the distribution of HIV and HCV medicines to developing countries and the logistical challenges that were before him and Gilead in order to be successful. He went on to say that only an engineer could overcome these challenges, and he has clearly done so. Clifford is an alum of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) that he praises as having helped him to complete the rigorous NJIT curriculum. He currently supports EOP student scholarships in order to acknowledge this highly effective program."
